• The Lord of the Rings? It left me cold

  Like many other films, I saw it between bouts of festive excess and hoped for nothing from it except what you could reasonably ask of a three-hour fantasy epic. I was absolutely  happy to overlook the absence of plausible characters and the sublimation of motivation to a lot of mythic “forces”, as long as the movie succeeded in one most important respect: it had to deliver enchantment.
